The top prospects for Canada’s National Women’s Development Team and Canada’s National Women’s Under-18 Team were invited to attend Canada’s National Women’s Program strength and conditioning camp, which took place on May 4-8 2016, in Hamilton, Ont.
The invitation list includes 50 candidates for Canada’s National Women’s Under-18 Team and 47 candidates for Canada’s National Women’s Development Team. Both programs will participate in on- and off-ice sessions, which will introduce and reiterate Hockey Canada’s expectations in areas such as nutrition, mental conditioning, physical fitness, testing, training, and other positive daily behaviours.
“This camp represents the first opportunity for us to evaluate and connect with players in our development and under-18 team programs as they prepare for the 2016-17 season,” said Melody Davidson, Hockey Canada’s general manager of national women’s team programs. “This four-day camp in Hamilton serves as an important building block towards upcoming championships, and also lays out the expectations for these players on and off the ice as they aim to represent Team Canada.”
Players selected for this camp are in consideration for the Canadian teams that will compete in a three-game series against the United States this summer in Calgary, as well as at the 2017 IIHF U18 Women’s World Championship and 2017 Nations Cup, and with Canada’s National Women’s Team.
Following the strength and condition camp, Hockey Canada scouts will continue to evaluate players at provincial camps, additional national team camps in August, and as they compete with their club and school teams at various provincial and national events, including the 2016 Esso Cup, Canada’s National Female Midget Championship, and both NCAA and Canadian Interuniversity Sport competition.
